Preventative Care is an important aspect of our dental office. It includes comprehensive dental exams, teeth cleaning, fluoride treatments, x- rays, treatment planning and education. This routine care is critically important to maintaining the health of your teeth, gums and mouth - at every age! Our goal is making your mouth healthy and stable, so you can enjoy your smile at every stage of life.
Cleaning / Checkups
A dental hygiene appointment consists of:
- Soft tissue exam and oral screening to identify changes in the tissues of the mouth.
- Periodontal or gum disease screening, including checking for pockets, a measurement of the depth of your gums, and overall assessment of the health of your mouth.
- X-rays of your teeth unless you had x-rays recently. A full set of x-rays should be taken with every new patient, or every 3-5 years. Bite wing x-rays are routinely taken every year, but based on each individual patient's dental risks and needs. The x-rays help locate disease and decay not seen by the naked eye.
- Preventative cleaning which includes cleaning and polishing your teeth to remove plaque (a sticky film of bacteria on the teeth that produces acid that causes tooth decay) and calculus (the hard build-up that isn’t able to be removed without professional help).
- Your dental hygienist will also discuss proper flossing and brushing technique or answer any questions about cavity prevention or dental hygiene.
One of the ways we fight against tooth decay in vulnerable teeth is by using a sealant. We apply a plastic resin (BPA free) to the chewing surfaces of your permanent teeth, bonding into the depressions and grooves of the premolars and molars. The sealant acts as a barrier, protecting enamel from bacteria, plaque and acids. Sealants are common among children and teens because decay is more likely to first develop in these areas of the mouth.
Fillings are one of the simplest ways for us to repair worn, damaged or decayed teeth. We use various restorative options depending on what's best for you, including metal, alloy, plastic or porcelain.
We know there are few dental procedures as scary as root canal therapy. Root canals are the treatment of the inside of the tooth, removing damaged tissue and infection if present. As technology in dentistry has improved so has the root canal process, offering a more comfortable procedure with less discomfort. We also have excellent specialists whom we work with in Duluth.
Crowns serve many purposes, including strengthening and improving the appearance of discolored or badly shaped natural teeth, supporting a tooth with a large filling, aiding in attaching a bridge, protecting a weak tooth from breaking or restoring one that's already broken and covering a dental implant.
A bridge is a partial denture used to replace missing teeth. We literally bridge the gap between the missing teeth with artificial ones. We can make your bridge out of gold, alloys, porcelain or a combination of these. A fixed bridge is cemented in place and isn’t ever removed, feeling and acting like natural teeth.
Custom Mouth Guards
Mouth guards are devices that fit over the teeth to prevent injury to the teeth, mouth or lips. They are frequently used for sports but can also be used to prevent tooth grinding or treat temporomandibular disorders.
Do you have dentures? Do you need them? Dentures can improve your smile and your whole facial appearance, as well as making it much easier to eat and speak. Many people don't realize that dentures are the partial or complete artificial replacement of natural teeth and the surrounding tissue, not just the teeth. If you have or need dentures you'll find guidance, expertise and considerate support in our office.
Today's braces and retainers are a big improvement over those in the past: less painful, more choices, and, if you want, nearly invisible. Through coursework with the American Orthodontic Society Dr. Hedstrom has recently added orthodontic services, with an approach focusing on guiding adult teeth into their proper position at an early age in order to correct protruding, crowding or misaligned/irregularly spaced teeth. Dr. Hedstrom and her staff have been enjoying this new aspect of complete care for their patients. Ask us what we can do to improve your smile! We also continue to offer referrals to the Orthodontists
Implants are a great option when you are trying to replace a missing tooth/teeth. Implants are growing in popularity and ease of placement. Currently Grand Marais Family Dentistry is not placing implants but we can talk to you about implants and can help to coordinate your care with specialists
in Duluth or the Metro Area.
Healthy gum tissue is an important part of overall oral health. There are many important aspects to keeping your tissue healthy. At every appointment we evaluate your mouth and offer either full mouth deep cleaning or site specific cleaning depending on your needs. We use deep tissue cleaning to prevent gum disease. Our health and mouths change throughout our lives. We monitor your gum tissue and offer mechanical and medicinal options as you might need.
We provide extraction services for nearly all erupted teeth. We will evaluate whether your tooth can be saved or needs to be removed, using an x-ray to look at the roots. If your tooth is beyond our abilities due to how much of the tooth is present and the nature of the roots, we have excellent Oral Surgeons in Duluth whom we will work with to help coordinate your care.
